Refined yet cosy works of French minimalism from Pascal Comelade - Détail Monochrome, the debut release on the stunted Labyrinthes spin off series from the Les Disques Du Soleil Et De L'Acier label. Each contained within their own little world, Comelade’s well-mannered miniatures are composed of naive toy-box notes and chirping / chiming primitive instruments, repetitive but never dull, laced with imagination and a whimsical sense of child-like innocence.Stately opener ‘Fragments’ is jaw-droppingly beautiful - reduced motifs for piano, guitar, organ, flute and more work in tandem to create a dream-like environment and an instant feel of familiarity, whilst the playful clatter of ‘Bolero Cubiste’, ‘Dancin On My Sofa’ and ‘Mecano Musical’ feels like a natural predecessor to the homey Spillage Fete / Bons microcosm, or even the likes of Pale Cocoon who were recording their own take around the same time. It’s rare I’ll say it, but a genuine perfect record.(NM / VG++)
