Madrid-based Ediciones Fontenebro pull back the curtain on one of Spain’s most overlooked electro-acoustic composers, delving into the catalogue of Zaragozas’ Pablo A. Giménez. A truly MAMMOTH undertaking.
Burrowed away throughout most of the late 70s and 80s, Giménez experimented with tape and cheap home-made instruments, together with an underpinning of philosophy, sociology and literature, to form a new strain of concrete music with influences of jazz and progressive rock. Equally indebted to minimalist compositional ideas laid-out by Stockhausen, Schaeffer and La Monte Young to Gong, Pascal Comelade, Aksak Maboul or even Tazartès. We’re always fascinated by the ways in which these foundational musical ideas were absorbed by musicians around the world and the regionality of subsequent recordings. To us, Giménez feels similar to the fathomless world of US outsider artist Robert Turman - both leaving a colossal body of work that exists well within its own microcosmic parameters. It’s a sprawling world of crusty tape-hiss atmospheres, stripped-back rhythm box and gusts of woodwind notes that really swallows you up and insulates from the outside world. Across the 4 cassettes here (!), there are 78 individual pieces that we’re not even gonna pretend we’ve all listened to (oh we will), but much like the intentions of the esteemed Creel Pone label, Ediciones Fontenebro’s undertaking here of archiving one of their fellow countryman’s canonical contributions feels properly vital for those drilling deep into the historical core of electronic music.
