Label: Ink Records – INK 007 Format: Vinyl, LP Country: UK Released: 1985 Genre: Electronic, Rock Style: Tribal, Modern Classical, Minimal
A genuinely bizarre and adventurous anomaly nestled within the back-catalogue of the UK synth-pop label Ink Records from one-hit wonder Nature Lovers.A little digging for info online reveals that Nature Lovers is an alias for producer / engineer / composer Jonathan Price, who was involved in this wild UK minimal synth cassette ‘Men Without Clothes’ as Software before retreating into the murky corporate world. On ‘Beginning To End’ though, it feels like Price is trying to cram a lifetime’s worth of ideas onto a single record - it’s an unbridled hotchpotch of Central African percussion and bold synthetic passages infused with splashes of guitars, rock drums, polyrhythms, Malian Kora, electronics and even classic Latin styles on one track in particular. It’s the sort of record that could only be conceived in the nocturnal studio downtime hours that encourage this level of brave, unrestrained experimentation without the confines of commercial success and budgeting breathing down your neck.A real carnival-like, psudo-folk epic! Rare! (NM / VG+)
