Electrifying and arrestingly beautiful original recordings from Mauritania - One of the most unusual records we’re ever come across.

We’re always here for records we couldn’t even imagine existing before they pop up, the ones that prompt a double, triple take and a minute for it to fully register.  This is one.   Allegedly L'Orchestre National Mauritanien is an all-family unit hailing from the West African desert nation of Mauritania, surrounded by the Sahara.  The endearing family photo on the cover shows what look to be three generations of musicians equip with a range of instruments - the older (presumably Grandparents) with more traditional instruments and the younger with an electric guitar.  It doesn’t really sound like anything we’ve ever heard before.  I guess due to where Mauritania lies there are elements of the electrified desert folk / blues found in neighbouring Mali or Niger, with traces g'nawa percussion from the north, but the fragility of the female singing, unusual shifting time signatures and juxtaposing of modern and traditional instruments places it totally out in it’s own world.  Like all the best records, it prompts a lot of unanswered questions where you can choose to hunt down the answer or fill in the gaps yourself.. (NM/VG+ - storage wear on sleeve - unplayed deadstock - rare!)
