Lefter-than-leftfield '89 LP from Russian experimentalist Mikhail Chekalin 'Post-Pop, Non-Pop'. A leading light of the avant-garde in the USSR, Chekalin's singular approach to 'synthesiser music' often leads to comparisons with the likes of Schultz, Asmus Tietchens and Vangelis; but there's something really unique about this LP. Maybe its the fact it was locked behind the iron curtain that creates this exotic air, and personally I find it truly incredible that the state actually sponsored this! What was the UK government pushing music-wise in '89? Certainly not this obscure sort of industrial-leaning, ambient-tinged, yet FUNKY weirdo shit. Like all the best records, there's no category for this one - no home is complete without a copy. TIP !!
