Time capsule Gaelic folk on the Irish non-profit label Gael-Linn from traditional singer Máire Ní Scolaí. One of the most beautiful recordings we’ve ever encountered.
Occasionally music has the power to stop you right in your tracks and carry away to another dimension. Máire Ní Scolaí, an Irish traditional singer born in 1909 and lifelong student of the Gaelic language, possesses this. Her wilting song craft is sparse and unadorned, just delicate upright piano keys and her distinctive trilled vocals, but it’s ability to convey a universally understood feeling of nostalgia, lost-love or wistfulness is incredible. It’s evocative of a world of old-world romance. We don’t understand any Gaelic, but the best music transcends language and the atmosphere of her music expresses her feelings better than anything. Maybe the timeless recordings of Molly Drake are an apt comparison, or the longing Tezeta songs of Ethiopian music from Menelik Wossenachew and Greek Mirolois. Across all cultures, it seems that music is the most adept vehicle for the communication of feelings surrounding sorrow and the passing of time. Unbelievably special - eternal thanks to @pianolarecords for the tip. (VG+/VG+)
