Hefty, brain-melting GRM split release with French concert pianist Michaël Levinas and Swiss composer Thomas Kessler sharing the spoils on this wonderfully constructed LP. Levinas on the A-side takes the contemporary classical route, a couple of wind-swept motifs for flute, one that's pretty sparse and lovely then the last chamber-style piece which is a pretty edgy with arching vocals and sporadic bursts of activity to keep you on your toes. But it's Kessler's side on this one for me, a full side of tripped-out electro-acoustic menace. There's a real harmony and balance between the prepared piano strikes, subtle violin work and mind-blowing noises coming out of whatever synthesiser he's got on the go. A real avant-garde exercise in tension and release. Beautifully presented in typical INA-GRM fashion. (NM)
