Ancient and enchanting mid-70’s Breton folk masterpiece from the late Celtic Harp master Kristen Nogues. An absolute showstopper.
Few records start as invitingly as Marc'h Gouez. The sound of footsteps on gravel, the creaking of a heavy wooden door opening then being shut amongst the heavenly notes of Nogues’ Harp. It works as a musical threshold into another world where time moves at a different speed. Growing up in Brittany, Nogues learnt the local language of the Northern French province from an early age and found joy expressing herself within the aged-old Breton folklore. Leading a group of friends on guitar, piano, violin and flute, Nogues’ harp and voice weave together and entangle themselves in a deep, spellbinding labyrinth that feels isolated, antiquated and earthy. Nothing really compares. The vital / transcendent early works of Fontaine & Areski perhaps in the sense that it does everything you’d want a French folk record to do and then infinitely more. Impossible to think of better music to match with a roaring fire on a winter’s night. Mind-blower. (Mint / New - gatefold with lovely booklet).
