Fire in the hole!!!Fully blown-out / blissed-out psychedelic MESS from the late Japanese outsider musician Michio Kadotani via the legendary P.S.F. Records label.
A lot of love for this one - the first time I heard it was like peeling back another layer to the big fat onion-like Japanese underground and being introduced to one of the most free-wheeling, out-of-time and unhinged collection of music seemingly to exist.A little bit of detective work reveals Kadotani san lived a short life, clocking out at the ripe age of 41, which further cements our assumption that he lived a life of wild, inebriated excess.He was also active alongside legendary bassist Asahito Nanjo(of Psychedelic Speed Freaks / High Rise) in an intriguing project named Rotting Telepathies which I’m eager to hear.You can almost taste the nicotine stains from the cell-like rehearsal room, Kadotani’s raw yet glistening guitar dances and squeals around a stripped-back rhythm box whilst his pissed-up delay-drenched drawl spews out on top.Grimy and impulsive, he manages to sound equally tortured and ecstatic at the same time - the high-water mark being when the sound of rattling machine-gun fire blends with the deranged feedback squeal.Seriously one of the most primal recordings ever and a masterclass in controlled chaos, evoking the chopped ’n screwed punk of Tom Smith (To Live And Shave In LA) or dilapidated song-craft of Daisuke Tobari, Die Welttraumforscher ++.Sadly an expensive / collectable CD but would love (LOVE) to see his stuff reissued by someone.(NM - with OBI)
