Surprise appearance from John Cage on Terre Thaemlitz’ Comatonse private label with an allegedly rejected ‘remix’ that was originally commissioned for hi-brow NYC imprint Mode, although eventually finding its way to out to the light thanks to this release. Terre picks up the pieces of abstracted minimal percussion pieces and stark piano hits and rearranges them into a deep, 14 minute voyage of pitter-patter rhythm with moody lounge jazz undertones steeped in her own unique Fagjazz™ approach. It’s a contemplative maelstrom of tinkering ivory keys, wilting strings and unfathomably low low-end, that repositions what would ordinarily be deep-set in the stuffy world of the avant-garde into the sorely missed club room 2s or generally more accessible DIY scenes. On the other-side, Terre invites Simon Fisher Turner to remix her remix of John Cage, resulting into this continual augmentation of the source material - SFT leaves bags of space and a sense of wide open-endedness, letting the atmosphere linger heavy with shimmering strings amid the distant piano keys and phasered percussion. Maybe the best release on a label held in very obvious high regard here! (NM/NM)
