Untouchable, genre-swerving, prime-number record ‘La Perversita’ - a unique multimedia cross-pollination between French political art collective Bazooka (including Kiki + Loulou Picasso), Libération journalists J.L. Hennig and Jeanne Foly with prolific producer genius Hector Zazou.  For a start, attempting to understand that this was released in 1979 creates instant appreciation for Zazou’s brave, pioneering and eccentric studio approach as he weaves his magic across a spread of dark, twisted and brutally experimental new-wave (?) pieces laced with explicit French lyrics.  The group exercise their surrealist deconstructions on popular classics from The Beatles (Strawberry Fields Forever) and The Rolling Stones’ ’Satisfaction’, stripping out the recognisable vocal hook and laying down sinister minimalistic production with subtle jolts of electronics and dark, processed (and I assume heavily politicised) French vocals.  The low-lit smoking room noir of ‘I Love You S…’ is a perfect track and is unforgettable - it’s late, languid, stoned groove sprinkled with whispered vocals, fizzing synthetics and dreamy 2-note guitar pick, whilst ‘La Soupeuse’ is a similarly extended, unhurried expanse of stripped-bared drum groove under hoovering tremolo guitar and dead-pan vocals.  Allegedly Zazou had spent time in New York in the late 70’s, absorbing the emergent Punk / No Wave scene and meeting members of DNA and Suicide, which is likely responsible for the album’s more shrill and dissonant moments, but there’s a uniquely eccentric, very European take on it all that liberates the music from any genre.  It’s a provocative and unashamedly explicit masterpiece that provokes on all fronts, musically, visually, technologically and politically.  THE BEST EVER..
