Genuinely mind-bending electro-acoustic works from French composer, ethnomusicologist and GRM member Jean Schwarz released via his own private label Celia Records in 1980. Schwarz cuts an idiosyncratic figure amongst his peers exploring the potentials of sound within the French institution Groupe de Recherches Musicales, combining a professional jazz background with an interest and knowledge in non-European / indigenous music forms whilst working across a broad multimedia platform that encompasses works for theatre and investigations into pure acoustic resonance. Here on the full A-side, ‘Year Of The Horse’ was originally scored for a piece of choreography and blends flurries of exotic field recordings with electronics and sonic manipulation. We’re dragged from a lively Gamelan ensemble into a vortex of hypnotic syne-wave tuning and treated acoustics whilst the low frequency rumble of thunder clatters overhead. On the other side, experiments are broken up into 5 individual sections and are more precise in their intentions, focusing on the the cyclical, rhythmic vibrations of ‘Architas’ to the calming, modulating electronic drones of ‘Vol Plane’ and more orchestrated ‘Bataille Finale’.
