Urghhh this is so good. Unannounced package landed at the shop today from Salford's #1 hardware nut Howes (very Howes!) containing the 10th instalment to his cult Cong Burn tape series. A-side effortlessly slips through a crop of heady, can't-be-arsed >110bpm techno cuts caked in that signature straigh-to-tape crust, before picking up the pace and settling into a more mechanical, left-field groove that touches on many of the firm CB reference points of golden-era dubstep, rolling minimal house and the more contemporary club sounds of YOUTH, etc.Not actually sure if this is a batch of old tracks mixed or a totally effortless, seamless live set, but either way it confirms the suspicion that the Cong Burn chief is sat on the biggest mount of unreleased heat in Greater Manchester. The other side offers more abstracted atmosphere pieces, slowly segueing into a clutch of stripped percussive tracks, one a potential co-lab with local co-conspirator and recent Livity signee Lack then retreating back to a pool of kaleidoscopic, swirling ambience.Ridiculously understated but of the highest quality.Sold out at source.. limited copies here.(Mint / New).
