Local label Natural Sciences crawls out of the gutter and dives deeper into the labyrinthine world of late 80’s underground cassette trading network with this DJ friendly 12” of Memphis-based Henry Hektik’s cassette Motion P. Music.
Once an active node on the clandestine cassette trading undeground, Hektik disappeared off grid and left little trace of existence, yet the tracks served up here from the presumably impossible to find cassette show real promise. Crisp, sparse drum programming underneath drifting guitar licks and whiffs of oriental vocals on Haiwasa recall firm favourites from Muslimgauze or Scott Fraser’s incredible Architecture LP, whereas other bits instantly remind us of our favourite records from 400 Blows, Pink Industry, A Produce, Minister Of Noise.. you get the picture. Gritty, raw, caked in tape hiss and obviously properly time-stamped, but there’s an intrigue to each of the proto-techno / industrial tracks that makes you wonder what might have been different if Hektik ever managed to emerge from his basement. One for the DJs - with fanzine! (Mint / New)
