Deeply transportive sound journey through the daily lives of people on the isolated Greek Island of Amorgos captured by Dutch painter Harry van Essen.
Sound Reporters was a relatively short-lived Amsterdam-based research and publication company focusing on anthropology, ethnomusicology, religion, travel and history. Published mainly on cassette, their works feature audio maps of the Amazon, soundscapes taken in Indonesia and soundworks from the enigmatic Italian composer Raffael Serra. Zoning in here specially on the tiny island port of Egiali, Harry Van Essen captures and collages the daily hubbub of peoples lives - atmospheric calls to prayer, fishing boats docking in the harbour, children playing in the street and the multigenerational lifestyle lived out in the open. Spliced in between is snippets of local folk music and pop sounds of the time, the clatter of cattle up in the mountains, the ever-present hum of cicadas and the infinite foamy sea wash on the rocks. It creates a dialogue between people and place, nature and society, past and present, beautifully arranged in a way that devours time. These sounds are incidental, unperformed and unrehearsed, the same way they’ve always been. Hearing the special moments within the everyday takes skill and there’s something special in being catapulted into another world, if only for the duration of this double LP. A really special, wonderfully cross-pollinated and ingenious release from the excellent Art Into Life label. (Mint / New - with insert)
