Mysterious privately released underground psyche LP handed out to friends and locals in Northern California. Low budget, primitive and endearing with constant wafts of flute and laid-back guitar... total UFO, rare. (VG++/generic sleeve)
Extremely rare 1974 private pressed underground progressive LP that has a very mysterious aura. After much research a band member was located who advised there were only "about 200" of these Lp's issued and handed out to their friends, as well l as some copies sold or handed out at their few and far between local Northern California performances. Most of the pressings were issued with blank white covers. So what's HAMMERHEAD all about? Well, the production is very primitive, as you get with many similar private pressings, but there lies the charm and the lo-fi production reflects to the nature of the band...Hammerhead were talented, no doubt, with a competent mix of guitar, winds and whirling flute accenting the self composed tracks. Side one with 4 tunes feature melodic structures overlayed by above mentioned instruments...the electrified flute tends to be dominant in futtering and winding all over the place. The vocals are of the primative nature, which are suitable for the style of the band. Side two is a side long song-jam that perhaps, provides as the albums highlight. Stretches of strumming guitar and basslines play off jazzy winds...but, again, it's the whirling flute-work that steals the show; imagine Ian (Jethro Tull) Anderson's flute-work style, teaming up with a lo-fi basement progressive band, creating what amounts to, a no commercial potential album. The result might be, could be, "Ingenius Crimes" by HAMMERHEAD.
