Dead stock copies of this mysterious floating ambient/psych/blues ritual from 1992.. Total monster!
The sixties and early seventies cast a long shadow. There have been almost constant psych/folk/garage/fuzz revivals all over the world ever since. But occasionally you come across a record that seems to come from a place where it is still 1969. Not a fancy-dress version, or a knowing tribute, but a report from a time-locked back bedroom where Syd never lost the plot and Marc Bolan never went electric. This self-titled album by Game of Clouds comes directly from that mystery zone, still apparently lingering in suburban Germany in 1991. It never puts a foot wrong. It’s an almost totally instrumental, completely improvised, it’s simple but never dumb, not too slick, too overburdened with flashy technique or too concerned with creamy noodling. It exists in an autumnal occult atmosphere all of its own. Guitar, flute, synth lines drift across each other above warm ticking drum computer and the whole thing unspools into the void capturing a lost barefoot afternoon, pretending to worship ancient Egyptian gods.
Sometimes you get the sinking feeling that the unearthing of privately pressed oddball records like this is the triumph of hope over experience, maybe in the end there’s one track where it all comes together, if that. That’s not so here. Game of Clouds is enough to renew your faith.. (NM/NM - unplayed deadstock)
