Two looong, deep and bleary morning sun dances from the always intriguing Gaia Tones.
There’s a quote from Robert Wyatt that I am almost certainly misremembering. It’s something about fusion getting things the wrong way around, that rock drums and jazz solos is no good. That the best thing might be Jazz drums and rock structures. To a certain extent this idea played out through certain post punk and no wave records, not least Wyatt’s own on Rough Trade. But more promisingly this can be linked to a certain strand of dance music… think certain Theo Parrish Records, Bug in a Bassbin, Deepblak etc. etc. Music where the drums shuffle and step, their patterns constantly evolving. When this works best, you end up close to a kind of dream music, something like a processional spiritual jazz epic with no solos. We get pretty close here. John Swing and David Soleil-mon’s mystery Gaia tones project has been slowly bubbling to the surface over the last few years. Here it reaches its most realised manifestation yet. Two long sides of murky dubbed out subs, those shuffling drums and the faintest blur of hopeful keyboards that come over as if Greg Bandy released a record on Skudge.. (Mint / New)
