Monumental 4LP anthology from French sound poet and Nouveau visual artist François Dufrêne - one of the most extensive and impressive sound poetry collections to date.

We’ve played through this box at least once a week for the past few months and every rotation draws us deeper into its world.  Backstory - Dufrêne was was one of the earliest sound poets.  Already in the Lettrist group at aged 16, later the ultra-Lettrist moment where he developed his own Crirhythm style which began incorporating vocal concrete music and the artistic possibilities of nonsense, noise, yelps, etc as a means of expression.  Most notably, in the mid-50s Dufrêne is the first artist reported to have performed with a tape recorder.

It’s often brutal, overpowering but laced with humour.  Heavily daubed classical music, smeared in heavy breathing and feverish vocal mutations.  There’s a juxtaposition between the highbrow, often impenetrable, ivory tower world of classical music and Dufrêne’s unsettling non-verbal poetry.  The lack of respect and razing of institution in a genuinely avant-garde way.  Elsewhere, jazz percussion is defaced, or tape-music pieces are performed without musical accompaniment allowing their jarring qualities to penetrate deeper.  Such works laid the foundation or later sound poets (Henri Chopin / Bernard Heidsieck), but we feel the same influence within the likes of Graham Lambkin’s work, Pierre Henry for INA-GRM, Hans Krüsi or Aaron Dilloway and much of the contemporary noise stuff.  Intrepid listening.  For some reason, we also have the box available on CD  (NM/NM).
