Properly enthralling, dream-like recordings from Cameroonian singularity and all-round polymath Francis Bebey.
With equal footing in the worlds of popular and academic music, amongst many other things, the late Francis Bebey is one of the hardest working artists of our time. African Sanza is a collection of purely acoustic recordings utilising only only instruments of African origin, most notably Bebey’s trusted sanza (or thumb piano). There’s an trance-like quality to his compositions, seemingly stripped back in nature yet melodically complex with the influence of the polyphonic harmonies natural to the native Central African Pygmy people of the forest. Interlocking perfectly with the timbres of the sanza and bass drum thud, Bebey’s voice floats on top, as if deeply connected to the music, its origin and its past. Timeless music as old time itself..
