Empty, wistful solo piano pieces from the late, self-taught Belgian composer Dominique Lawalrée self-released via his own Editions Walrus private press. Rooted in simplicity and extreme minimalism, Lawalrée’s compositions always feel inward looking yet with a sense of content - existing on their own time plane with no real start or end. There’s no obvious sense of virtuosity, instead letting each note carefully eek it’s way out to decorate the environment, with a subtle sadness like watching the rain outside a window. Choosing only to play very small concerts for limited audiences and privately releasing his music, Lawalrée’s cultivated a cult, outsider status, similar in ways to the Ethiopian nun pianist Emahoy Tsegue Maryam Guebrou, who despite being world’s apart, share the same unwavering love and dedication to their own private music. Very special and near-impossible to find.. (VG+ / VG+ - some light noise in parts, very quiet music).
