Raw, lively percussion and rhythms on the excellent ‘Música Popular Brasileira Contemporânea’ series from Brazilian percussionist, bass player and songwriter Djalma Novaes Corrêa.I won’t hesitate to admit that music from South America is a huge blindspot for me and doesn’t feature as much as it should in the store - but the intensity and immediacy of ’78 LP ‘Baiafro’ has had me floored.Spread across a range of sweat-drenched instrumentals, Corrêa explores the connection with the rhythms of his native Brazilian birth land and their ancestral home of Africa. The title track is a fierce piece of polyrhythmic dexterity in true batacuda style, whilst tracks like ‘Samba De Ousadia’ and ‘Os Quatros Elements’ feel more inspired by the indigenous music of the Amazon with sprinklings of bird callings and the essence of the forest.Very special record that’s increasingly harder to spot in the wild..
