Vital 1978 debut release from David Behrman on Mimi Johnson’s cherished and pioneering Lovely Music imprint ‘On The Other Ocean’.  A strikingly prescient example of humans and a kind of early artificial intelligence in the arts, Behrman set to work tinkering and messing around with odd machinery to finally assemble Kim-1, a computer program designed to ‘hear’ and interact with pitches, which in turn capable of triggering and sending harmonies to two other handmade synthesisers.  On the title track Maggi Payne’s flute and Arthur Stidfole’s bassoon tentatively start feeling out and developing harmonies with the computer, dreamily drifting between deeply locked, sustained overtones and reacting to the unexpected shifts in pitch.  But embracing the unexpected results is what makes the piece so special, when the circuitry ‘mis-reads’ the harmony and clumsily glitches between tones before calmly settling back into the piece.  It’s a prime example of what makes the Lovely Music label so special, managing to operate on two levels, one being the heavy underpinning of then pioneering technology, ideas and compostional approaches whilst maintaining all the allure of indescribably beautiful music that can easily get swept away when things get too ‘academic’.  A rare example of serenity occurring when humans and technology collide.(NM/NM).
