Enfant Terrible sub-label Vrystaete reintroduce this sorely overlooked collaboration between two icons of the ‘post-industrial’ scene with the 2003 CD ‘Entre Siempre Y Jamás Suben Las Mareas, Duermen Las Ciudades’ from Catalan’s Ô Paradis and Austria’s Nový Svět finally getting the attention and audience it deserves through this thoughtfully presented vinyl run with all the label’s usual attention to details.  It feels like both of the adventurous, free-spirited qualities of both artists here compliment one another, the warm melancholy of Ô Paradis’s lo-fi yet folksy industrial roots and the darker, more haunted surrealism of Nový Svět managing to accentuate each other’s finer qualities.  I’ve had this on a lot the past few weeks and still fully trying to make sense of it, their sound feels like shifting sands with unpredictable twists and turns, from the shimmering guitar drones and bird song of opener ‘Introducción’, to the achingly beautiful ‘Tierra Gastada’ which gives the feel of an Iberian take on Brannten Schnüre, or the more dadaistic ‘La Cuna’ and ‘Barcelona!’.  It’s never quite clear who’s pulling the strings, yet the sound palette and ideas throughout feel new and inventive - in fact I’d only just realised this was written in the early 00’s - the murky downtempo ‘Distancia 2’ and quirky bossa-nova flex of ‘Te Vi Pasar’ are ranking amongst some of the most contemporary things I’ve heard this year.  It could easily take a few trips around with this one to fully appreciate its magic, but you’d be rewarded for fully submitting to it.  Highlight of the year so far..
