Brilliant public-service 7” issue of modern-classic futuristic pop/dancehall mutant that has been only previously been orbiting digitally
How often for you hear music that sounds utterly new? And then, how that music work properly as pop music? Almost never, right? I mean pop in it’s most expanded form of course. Pop broadly defined for me as: something that catches your ear immediately, something that resolves and repeats, something that’s aiming itself outwards at the world and something that seems to define the moment in which it was made. Here is a prime example. Gavsborg is a truly brilliant and inventive producer. Nearly everything that he makes seems to push at the formal possibilities of pop music. But this one stands out.
A voice counts to nine, a synth line bubbles, nine beats thud, four beats skip, a tumbling echo of seagullish sounds moves through and then it’s over. I guess you could point to elements of Cumbia, nods to Timberland/Xterminator/Sean J. Period. But when it sounds this new this simple and this brilliant who cares?
The track has been floating around on digital for a couple of years. So is a major stroke of genius that Phoung-Dan’s Dispari label has put it out on a seven. And the fact that it’s backed by a great grainy mystery-zone dub by Hamburg collective Cloud Management is just the cherry on the cake.
