Hypnotising almost-songs from cATHOLIC CHURGH - a new collaboration between sainted Brit-in-Sweden Thomas bush and US artist Jon Auman.
It’d be hard to exaggerate just how much we’ve been inside this one the past few weeks. YOUMUSTBETIRED is an 18-piece sedation of lo-fi song-craft that seems to diffuse itself into the atmosphere. Beautifully delicate, unobtrusive yet with enough going on to carry you elsewhere. Bush’s now-signature sound is instantly recognisable - those slouched basslines, perma-hiss from the tascam and the atmospheric middle-distance stare. Here the vocals, now mostly smothered beyond intelligibility, act more as a texture - often frail and exposed, or heavily EQ’d past recognition. In contrast to Thomas’ recent epic ‘The Next 60 Years’ - which was decidedly song-focused - here the emphasis is on mood and feeling. Folksy, introspective and cast in golden early-hours sunlight creating a private space you’ll not want to leave. Just perfect, the undisputed highlight of the year so far.
