If W G Sebald made pop music… The Brannten Schnüre back in print..
Brannten Schnüre have reissued this, possibly their best record, like a lifeline to save us from the shark infested waters of Discogs. Originally released in 2019 by Low Company, it quickly became established as the cornerstone of their catalogue, and also quickly became impossible to score and then eye-wateringly expensive. Via records on Aguirre, Vrystaete, I Dischi Del Barone etc. Brannten Schnüre have built a mysterious and singular world rich with rainy weltschmerz. Seance-like they conjure the ghosts of the European 20th century: Cold War schoolrooms, mildewed photo albums and the crackle of Numbers stations spooling through the shortwave. Erinnerungen An Gesichter contains all pieces of their particular puzzle: Smeared and rolling drones, narcotic sung/spoken travelogue vocals and degraded loops of folk and classical music. All their releases are great, but somehow on this record the ingredients form something more than the sum of its parts, adding up to a kind of endlessly heart broken pop music. If the swirling strings on album closer Jedes Gesprochene Wort don’t fill your heart, but also make you ache like pushing on a bruise, then I don’t want to know you... (Mint / New)
