Born out of the former Yugoslavian republic, EBM group Borghesia emerged from the alternative theatre group FV-112/15 and represented an artistic activist movement that pushed sexual freedom to the forefront of political issues in the city of Ljubljana, the modern day Slovenian capital. The 1985 release ‘Ljubav Je Hladnija Od Smrti’ was their first LP away from cassette and was constructed of stark electronics, spliced movie dialogue and immensely funky machine-based rhythms. Deadpan vocals collide with thundering claps and echoed guitar picks on ‘Tako Mladi’ whilst ‘A.R.’ carries a trance inducing Chris & Cosey-esque ceaseless mechanic drive. Groovier is ‘Brisk Vomit’, which comprises of breathless vocals and a double dose of slap bass. Aesthetically, Borghesia were keen to explore the transgressive, taboo and repressed in their imagery, which touched on themes of BDSM. Hugely recommended for fans of Liaisons Dangereuses, Nitzer Ebb and Front 242.. (VG+/VG+ - top copy / post still in tact)
