At last, the one that really matters is back in print.
There have been plenty of other Blod records, and there will, presumably, be many more. But it’s this LP that’s really stuck for me. Perhaps because it was my first introduction to his world. In fact it was the part of the first batch of records to introduce me to the whole FFFM thing. Like the best kind of records it articulates something you didn’t know you wanted to hear. Combinations of sounds and ideas the you hadn’t a clue would suddenly seem important become all you want to concentrate on, the sound of a whole new scene or genre opening up. Who knew that a meeting of socialist prog, school room folk and blunted NZ-style guitar pop could produce a coherent and totally addictive whole. The drums are loose but sit back, strangely in the pocket for a record like this. There’s a sense of collage, snatches of found song appear and disappear and melodic elements are stated and restated across different songs. But it’s probably the keyboards that really do it for me, reedy organ, sweet Mellotron and some kind of ancient voice synthesiser weave across the record creating a yearning feeling of countercultural deep time. Thank goodness then that this one has resurfaced... (Mint / New - with poster + insert)
