Surrealist genre-blurring from long-running Dutch duo Beequeen - total hidden gem, unplayed deadstock.
Beequeen are a confusing group for us.A Dutch duo comprised of Frans de Waard (most notably of Kapotte Muziek, but also Doc Wör Mirran) and Freek Kinkelaar of Brunnen, although both seem to have done time in many other one-away noise / improv groups.The usual European underground avant-garde / (post)-industrial touch-points feel within reach - Nurse With Wound, H.N.A.S, Asmus Tietchens, The Hafler Trio +++ - but here Ownliness, released in the early 00s badlands, feels remarkably up to date and erm.. genuinely pleasing to listen to.Blossoming out of noise and tape experiments, Ownliness sees the duo attempting to make songs, whilst embracing the scent of trip-hop and post-rock in the air of the time.The oddly titled ‘With Anna You Get Eggroll’ drifts into a wonderfully sedate dreamy drum-loop amidst a mist of discreet field-recordings and tape collage sounds, before they burrows back inside and pulling over the blanket with shimmering drone passages and scatterings of concrete noise.Towards the end, ‘Beam Ends’ drifts off into dreamland with softly played guitar notes and gently yearning organ vibrato.Here, you really get an taste of what that stern 90’s European experimental underground could have become if it weren’t so afraid to embrace / indulge a sense of pop.A truly special one worthy of many repeat listens which would have totally passed us by if it weren’t for the esteemed excavation works of @pianola Records.Strongly tripped - last copies!(Mint / New - unplayed deadstock with 7”, 1 pp pls!!!)
