Gently mesmerizing ethereal psych-pop gem from Japanese underground singer songwriter Ai Aso. Too good to be true!
Whether solo or with The Stars / Boris, all of Ai Aso’s output is worthy of investigation, but Umerumonoizen released in 2005 goes way back to a demo tape of hers recorded in 1997. That distinctive fragile vocal at its most delicate and insecure. Each song moves at a snails-pace, close-mic acoustic guitars notes are eked out with endearing inconsistancy as she shyly sings along as if trying to conceal herself to the outside world. Maybe intentional or a result of not wanting to wake the neighbours but however this humble demo was recorded, assuming at extremely low volume with the gains CRANKED, gives the whole thing a dreamy tape hiss like cosy cotton wool. Totally perfect and easy to miss. (NM)
