Lesser spotted Folkways publication focusing on three separate Pre-Columbian indigenous groups from Chile's northern provinces. Stunner!! (NM/VG+)
In Chile, there are three groups that are direct descendants of communities of the Pre-Columbian Americas: the Aymara, who inhabit the Andean mountains and Altiplano located in Chile’s two most northern provinces, Tarapaca and Antofagasta; the Qawashqar (also called Alakaluf), one of the oldest of the original inhabitants of the southernmost region of this planet, the Tierra del Fuego; and the Mapuche, who live mainly in the region called “the Frontier” or the “Araucanía” in southern Chile, located in the provinces of Malleco and Cautín. Aymara musicians traditionally incorporate wind instruments, reed whistles, stringed instruments, and pipes for songs dedicated to animals or saints, or freeform chants. As farmers, the Aymara people’s floreo festival celebrates their herds. Qawashqar tracks presented here are in the form of chants. At the time of the album’s recording, only 47 Qawashqar people remained. Mapuche music features wind and percussion instruments to create sounds for Mapuche ritual and social life. Mapuche songs are often improvised at parties to fit a particular situation.
