The truest sign of any genuinely special DJ is making the usual sound strange. Playing songs you’ve probably heard before from artists you definitely know, but in a way you’ve most likely never encountered. Ugne is just that. A spellbinding singer and artist in her own right, but her selection here exhibits a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of her own sound, singular and totally natural in its ability in manifesting an unusual atmosphere out of the ordinary. Prestige jazz piano collapses into uncanny contemporary arrangements, bleeding into oddball telephone interviews and blow-out funk and dizzying sound collage. Ugne’s Baltic heritage is beautifully represented in a few moments of stunning Lithuanian folk singing which naturally gives way to nostalgic piano keys and moving gospel chants in the blink of an eye.
