What catches his ear seems to be the rare meeting of aptitude and outsiderism, art pop that’s as stylistically askew as it is formally accomplished. There’s also a consistent strain of theatricality, a Brecht & Weil flair suggesting a European analogue of Stephin Merritt’s obsession with the Great American Songbook. Despite the mix’s wide stylistic range—from the archest art pop, to upscale vocal jazz, to homespun chamber music, to shambling post-punk with the wheels coming off—it’s full of songs brimming with emotions threatening to overspill their bounds. After all, what could be more sincere than a theatrical performance? And what better evidence of true passion than hard-won craft?
