Admittedly a little slow on the uptake here but truly floored by this one from Barcelona’s Urpa i musell label, a deeply personal moment of expression routed in seclusion and displacement from Spanish expat in Belgium Ubaldo. I wouldn’t usually, but it’s worth mentioning in this rare case that opening up the record for the first time is pretty moving experience (!), beautifully paper-bound, hand-taped shut, poster, little packet of dried grass, okay.. stop - but it sets the mood for the intimate sound world that lies ahead. ‘Casa’ collects private fragments of round feedback tones, deeply contemplative drones, scraps of plucked string and distant vocals, rendering it into a time dilating microcosm that feels like a secret window into the innermost feelings of the artist. The sound pallette is totally different (rooted in shards of instruments and sustained tones rather than electronics) but the atmosphere recalls the same uniquely homey sentiment that underpins Ippei & Aki’s ‘Natsu No Zenbu’ from this year, or Nuno Canavarro’s enduring classic ‘Plux Quba’ - comparisons that definitely aren’t wheeled-out often! Properly speechless *re-writes EOY chart*.. (Mint / New - with posters and multi extra bits).
