Far-gazing imaginary landscapes from two of Tokyo’s avant-garde underground mainstays Osoyoos.
A lot of our favourite music is an expression of place. Something that evokes scenery familiar or exotic. That place can be real, or it can be in your imagination. It’s a concept that’s been throughly explored - Jon Hassell’s ‘4th World’ environments or the canon of Sci-Fi indebted Detroit techno, the list goes on. Osoyoos is the joint project of Japanese artist Yoshi Machida and Canadian guitarist (and many other things) Cal Lyall. Satellite Rides, Night Lies taps into that intermediate state between dreams and reality. Homey banjo strings tumble over steel pan and gamelan, a cultural clash between the windswept American mid-west and the humid Indonesian island of Java. It’s effortlessly transporting and no single element tries to outdo one another, allowing time to breakdown and the mind to wander. (Mint / New - with free DL).
