Mesmerising electro-acoustic scene-setting from the great French professor, writer, composer, multi-linguist Michel Chion.
Anyone who’s paid any attention to what we’re into here should know we’re suckers for anything on the mighty INA-GRM series from the late 70’s to mid 80’s - La Ronde (’82) could be the best. It’s a piece of four parts, where Chion, armed with a world famous knowledge of film theory and composition, conjures up his charismatic ‘Sound Images’ - imaginary environments projected into our inner mind-eye with varied texture, tone and timbre. The title piece provokes images of sepia-coloured old Europe- passing voices and frequency scanning noise mashed with a bustling city-scape and nostalgia-laced fairground fun. Chion’s unique spatial awareness and merging of musique concrete techniques and organic field-recordings creates as unique sense of augmented reality and depth. ‘On n’arrête pas le regret’ (’75) captures a dynamic movement of high-intensity drama and tranquility, with processed organ parts, buried toy piano, vocal pieces and electronics uniting into an immersive 12+ minute sound trip, whilst ‘Tu’ is a tense Libretto featuring the unmistakable vocal contributions of the late legend Ghedalia Tazartes. One of the best records of it’s kind. (NM/VG+ (corner knock) - with all inserts and multi-language descriptions).
