The good ship Honest Jons busts out of the gates swinging with this new 3-track 12” from grubby-fingered NYC crate digger / outsider artist Madteo. The title track ‘Str8 Crooked’ works loose ’n jangly tribal percussion into probing sub-bass jolts and big filter-swept synth leads into a rowdy, loose-limbed, carnival-like atmosphere, whilst ‘Build Back Better Sweatshops’ is a rough-hewn array of cut-up jacking drums, strafing on and off the grid and heavily imbued with his unique Queens cut-up / collaged / hip-hop aesthetic. The B-side though, is insane.. a 16 minute joy ride, freeform and balancing on the edge of a cliff. Unsettled, freehand percussion combining with scribbly, morphing melodics that slowly evolves throughout its shape-shifting duration. Dunno if it’s just me that’s be PINING for the return of the 12” after what feels like a very album / compilation based ‘home listening’ lockdown, but it really feels like this couldn’t have come at a better time, dredging up that 2011 - 2013 nostalgia where SUED / Acido ++ were rolling weird ’n wonky stuff out like this on regs. Too good to miss.. artwork by Will Bankhead too! (Mint / New)
