Too delicate to be true pastoral folk pop meets diaristic concrète on Gothenburg’s Discreet Music label.
For all the feverish Paypal hammering that greets any new release on Förlag För Fri Musik, it seems crazy that the records on the affiliated Discreet label seem to cause less stir. The really beautiful Facit LP from last year is a case in point. Here then is another Gothenburg sleeper that more than deserves attention. Klas Trollius’ ‘Sångers Till En Människa’ floats in the water meadows, birds and insects hover and swoop while guitar glockenspiel and voice form patterns across the surface and just the right amount of echo puts a trail of colour in their wake. It begins with a cover of John Martyn’s Over the Hill, which takes the slightly smug original and gently explodes it, creating an impressionistic response, all whispered vocals, points of light and lapping micro rhythms. This very much sets the tone for the whole record. Over 5 tracks some longer than others, Trollius creates an elegantly restricted sound world that is a perfect respite from real life.. (Mint / New)
