Rainy afternoon minimalism from Manchester circa 1982. Near impossible to score for the longest time, Light Patterns is end-to-end gorgeous: a collection of layered guitar, bass and synth instrumentals, with threads of aching melody that cross and recross. Geographically and stylistically Vini Riley is an obvious, if massively lazy comparison, but these guys are definitely fellow travellers. It could almost be a UK hot-rock-burnt take on ECM’s classic early 80s run - think Pat Metheney at his most cyclical or Steve Tibbets amazing Northern Song LP. However you cut it, Light Patterns is a major piece of the puzzle, thankfully available again on vinyl via Santa Cruz’s Smiling C, mastered by Brandon Hocura. It’s 100 percent perfect bedsit head music. You might be glued to the sofa bed, but you’re dreaming of swallows in the updraft.. (Mint / New - with printed inner)
