A long lost treasure mined from the golden age of British home recording and underground cassette culture, Kevin Harrison’s Inscrutably Obvious originally appeared on Cherry Red in 1981 and covered a variety of styles and influences. It’s a distillation of cosmic guitar albums from the likes of Manuel Gottsching / Ash Ra refracted through the lens of late 70’s / early 80’s industrial life in Coventry, with a dash of Frippertronics but distilled down with an awareness of Dome / Bruce Gilbert’s minimalism with a post-punk core. It’s a ridiculously varied yet surprisingly cohesive collection of DIY production that still stands up today, leaning closer to natural, free-flowing experimentation without over thinking, rather than self-indulgent synth doodling. As featured on Tabi Tapes 004!(NM)
