Kath Blooms Early records, both with Loren Connors and without, are some of the most supremely heartbroken pieces of music ever committed to tape. Her soft, cracked voice and heavily affecting songs take you straight the mystery zone. Like half-overhearing the emotional crises of your older sisters friends transposed to an endless numbed American afternoon where temporary relationships collapse in sleepy broken conversations. The closest things might be John Cassavetes & Bo Harwood’s No One Around to Hear it or Jandek’s Nancy Sings. Bloom has surfaced here and there in the subsequent decades, occasionally performing or recording something but never sticking around long enough to let the mystery wear off. Over the last few years there has been a renewed burst of activity. She is playing and recording again, now as a duo with guitarist David Shapiro. Her voice is the same but different, still soft still cracked but now heavy with experience, making these recordings almost unbearably poignant. Shapiro’s take on acoustic guitar is far more straight ahead, and nowhere near as splintered and dislocated as Connors. But somehow this suits the deceptively simple style of Bloom’s singing and harmonica playing, forming what feels like a through-line to the bruised 60s cafe-folk that must have been her source material...
