Bare bones, front-porch dwelling loner blues guitar collection from Lancashire-born, Sweden-based musician Jon Collin. Having been placed to the forefront of many people’s attention off the back of the recent (incredible!!) collaboration with fellow Lancastrian’s Demdike Stare, Jon’s solo ‘Water & Rock Music Volume 1’ is his raw talent in its most undiluted form - an amalgamation composed of multiple touching points, the outsider folk of Loren Connors, classic American slide-guitar blues of Basho / Fahey, Derek Bailey’s brave free-improv and even the raw reclusiveness of Jandek if ya fancy. But his style is undisputedly unique, grounded by an obvious talent that’s allowed a strong bond between instrument and player, but with an appreciation of silence and the environment in which the music lives. Thunder rumbles in the distance, a stream runs softly in the background, birds flutter overhead and Jon occasionally, very naturally vocalising with the surroundings around him adding to the sense of time-elasticity and general calm. The sort of record you never want to end.. (Mint / New).
