Glasgow’s Jamie Burke keeps the in-house Tabi Tapes series rollling with this vital, comprehensive survey of the contemporary underground, peeling back the innumerate and seemingly impenetrable layers of recent(ish) DIY and experimental offerings from around the world for this 85 minute experience. Many may already be familiar, but for those that aren’t.. Jamie was responsible for the long-running / much lauded regular NTS show ‘Are You Before’ that is sorely missed for it’s sentimental, immersive sound journeys and staggering 360° levels of eclecticism. Also! As far as I’m aware Jamie is the only NTS resident with their own dedicated Discogs playlist / shine, but let’s not butter him up toooo much. Back to this one though, the two sides establish a unique sound world assembled through the cherry picking of reflective song-writing, threaded together by scraps of atmospheric sound-art and environmental recordings that put the listener in a place. There are pensive moments, there are beautiful moments, there are deep moments, but in all it’s a homage to the dark art of sequencing and mood setting, plus being the nice guy that he is, Jamie’s also included a handy track-listing insert for further investigation, if you do so wish.
