Hauntingly beautiful suite of minimal composition from American composer Ingram Marshall for brass, tape-delay, synth and field recordings of Fog Horns.  Pioneering the use of emergent digital recording technology, Marshall manages to entwine the worlds of environmental sound and modern composition, recalling the large steamers of the San Francisco Bay on ‘Fog Tropes’ - a sorta elegiac call and response between the industrial ships of the night and the local inhabitants with a properly heart-wrenching brass section evocative of some Tape Loop Orchestra’s most intimate moments.  ‘Gradual Requiem’ follows and expands on the feeling of melancoly - a floating piece anchored by the digital delay of the Serge synth and refracted mandolin notes,  gambuh, voice and finally piano that gradually builds to a tension-releasing conclusion.  Stark, hard-hitting emotion cuts through the entirety of this one.  (NM / NM - Original US press - with insert).
