Deeply enveloping barely-there psychedelia from Japanese trio Hontatedori for David Grubbs’ Drag City offshoot label Blue Chopsticks.
We’re always strongly drawn to the minimalist approach for maximum impact.Hontatedori, the trio ft veteran Japanese improv musician Taku Unami, Moe Kamura and Tetuzi Akiyama, have taken that to the extreme. It walks the tightrope of the happy / sad axis, distilling the barebones of indie-pop, ancient plainchant and icy psychedelia into something unbelievable subtle yet complex. At times it feels like you’re left waiting for the next note. Each tone capable of shifting the emotion somewhere else you didn’t expect.Kamura’s softly intimate vocals move between each word like stepping stones, creating its own fragile microcosm insulated from the outside world.Much like the works of recent favourites from Reiko Kudo, Tsuki No Wa or Izumi Hirakawa, Hontatedori is another key node on the vastly rich and uniquely creative network of the Japanese independent underground.(Mint / New)
