Vital piece of minimalist composition performed by Hungarian contemporary classical ensemble Group 180. Here they present two pieces from all-time great Steve Reich; one classic 'Piano Phase', a mind-boggling mix of pure simplicity and extreme technical virtuosity and the other 'Octet' which was first presented on Reich's 1980 ECM release. This rendition (arranged by Tibor Szemzo!!!) just seems to flow like a river, purely hypnotic and whilst relaying on repetition, no instrument or pattern outstays their welcome. Elsewhere we're offered two pieces of original homegrown composition, the standout being Béla Faragó's 'A Pók Halála + Sírfelirat', which takes obvious influence from the influential wave of American minimalism and is a beautiful, journeying, highly polished mind-trip. VERY good value for money this one. (Vinyl & Sleeve VG++).
