Potentially the most hardcore mixtape in the series and sorta the one we’ve been waiting for. Fellowship’s 90 minute selection is a round the world journey that acts as a musical trepanation for the skull. It’s beautifully disorientating and dislocating, yet expertly sequenced to reveal geographical links between disparate traditional styles. Pulling from a vast knowledge of ethnomusicology recordings ranging from the 1950s to present day, Fellowship highlights those fleeting encounters with the surreal, bizarre and astonishing musical techniques and traditions. From sotto voce duets of Central Africa, thru Central Asian throat-singing, hallucinogenic mating calls of birds in Venezuela and ceremonial music of Papua New Guinea, it’s a brief collection that really opens the mind to the sheer variety of traditional music. Acting as a gateway drug into the world of ethnomusicology and hopefully inspire more to dig deeper into some of the more unknown pockets of indigenous music. We’re not worthy!
