Total one-off, impossible to pigeonhole release from the mysterious Berbel Nobodius released via Terry Burrow’s revered 80’s private press Hamster Records And Tapes label. A true highlight of the endless sprawl of UK home-recorded /private releases, Wanton But Windblown is an enigmatic journey of highs and lows, incorporating tumbling drum-machine skits, uplifting art-rock instrumentals, darker looped passages of oppressive / foreboding atmosphere and weightless moments of soaring, wide-eyed optimism. I’d spent ages trying to work out exactly what the illusive Berbel Nobodius (real name Mark Beaumont, also responsible for that killer Push-Button Pleasure stuff) was trying to achieve this totally detached LP that exists solely in its own world, but after reading a rare interview with him via the great Okonkole-y-Trompa blog, he revealed he was just trying to copy Cluster - it all makes sense. The jury’s out on whether that was a success or not, but despite Wanton But Windblown’s lofty attempts to replicate the cutting edge Kosmiche / Krautrock masters, it still stands alone as one of the finest moments in the golden age of clandestine UK recording and experimentation ..
