Crucial Superior Viaduct reissue of Alvin Curran's crushingly beautiful 1975 LP on the short-lived Italian imprint Ananda. In a departure from the more free-form explorations with the Musica Elettronica Viva group (also worth investigating!), Canti E Vedute... finds Curran flying solo for the first time, taking reference from the American school of minimalism (La Monte, T.Riley ++) and creating two extended pieces that are as important as any in the canon. It's a collage style, abstracted sonic journey through operatic human voice, synthesisers, primitive percussion (glass, wood, plastic tubing) and brass together with interspersed field recordings, the crashing of waves, the wind, etc! There's plenty of twists and turns along the way to keep you interested and whilst with most people this approach would massively flop as a load of pretentious, a-musical fidgeting, Curran actually pulls it off by imparting his own unique human touch that adds this wistful, almost familiar feel. If the second piece on here (B-side) doesn't change yer life I don't know what will, one of the best ever. (MINT / SEALED / 2018 Superior Viaduct repress).
